Taxonomic Hierarchy

  • Kingdom- Animalia
  • Phylum- Chordata
  • Class- Mammalia
  • Order- Artiodactyla
  • Family- Cervidae
Genus- Alces
Species- Alces

Scientific and common name

  • Moose
  • Eurasian Elk
  • *Is the largest of the deer species
  • Scientific name: Alces

Geographical location

  • Moose inhabit northern regions such as;
  • Parts of Canada, Alaska, and Europe.
Moose are found in northern climates often in swamps, spruce forests, and willow and ash thickets.

Status on the Red list

  • Eurasian Elk- least concern
  • Moose- least concern
  • Moose population in Minnesota has quickly decreased
The Eurasian elk population is increasing and
the moose(American) population is stable according to the Red List
Moose in Minnesota-

Population

  • There is an estimate of over 2 million in the world.
  • Canada has the highest population
  • Parts of Asia that have moose population are very low
Canada has 1 million

population estimation of moose in the north eastern parts of America and Canada -250,000-330,000

Scandinavia and Poland have a combined estimated population of 1.3 million (about 700,000 are in Scandinavia)

Asia- estimation about 11,000

Role Within their ecosystem

  • Moose are herbivorous animals
  • Their food source is twigs and shrubs
  • Moose are also a food source for large predators
Because moose eat twigs and shrubs they influence the development of forests

They influence the growth of the plants within their ecosystem

Moose are a food source for bears, wolves and scavengers

Benefits of Moose

  • Moose keep the balance of biodiversity
  • Without moose their predators population
  • would begin to decline
  • Without them there might be an overgrowth
  • of plant life

threats to moose

  • Predators
  • Hunting
  • Climate
  • Disease

laws

  • In New York the DEC instituted actions to
  • monitor and protect the moose population.
  • There are hunting laws and hunting seasons
such as 1. supporting the return of moose in the northern 14 counties of the state 2. rejected a proposal to accelerate the natural return of moose through a translocation program 3. recognizing the need to monitor the species 4. address nuisance situations

The hunting seasons and laws are to regulate the number of moose killed to ensure the safety of the species
