The Tale begins

With Zeus (as usual)

ZEUS & EUROPA

Europa was the daughter of the King of Sidon
Sidon=Modern Day Lebanon
Zeus was "made to fall in love" with Europa by Aphrodite; Hera was away, but he decided to go to Earth disguised as a beautiful bull (Chestnut in color with a silver, crescent moon shape on his brow). He seduced her with "musical lowing", convinced her to mount his back, and he lept across the seas-- taking her to very same island his mother hid him as a baby (Crete!)

Zeus & Europa=

King Minos!

MINOS + PASIPHAE=

Androgeus (son) & Ariadne (daughter)

Pasiphae & Bull=

The Minotaur! (trans. Mino's Bull)

ATHENS...

Meanwhile, in

KING AEGEUS

Aegeus & Aethra=

THESEUS!
Aegeus met Aethra is Southern Greece, had an affair with her, impregnated her, and left for Athens before the birth of his child.

BUT, left a "legacy" behind for the child, IF it was boy.

In a hollow behind a great stone: a sword and a pair of sandals. If he grew to be strong enough one day to get these items, Aethra was to send him to Athens where he could claim his right place.

If not, ehhhh.....

Of course, Theseus grew quickly and strong enough to easily move to stone and collect his legacy. He goes on his way to Athens...

Two Choices of Theseus: he could go by sea or by land. Sea was safer, hence Theseus who loved adventure and wanted to make a name for himself chose to go by land.

He kills many notorious robbers/bandits, and his legend grows.

Arrives in Athens as a celebrated hero, yet Aegeus was unaware this was his son AND was jealous of his growing popularity. He actually plans to poison him (a plan invented and encouraged by Medea-- of Jason fame-- a sorceress who had great influence over The King). She had escaped to Athens from Corinth after killing Jason's kids.

She knew how this young hero truly was and did not want his identity known, less she lose her influence/power with The King.

She hands Theseus a poisoned cup; he takes it and takes out his sword to salute The King and reveal himself. Aegeus recognizes it immediately, and knocks the cup away. (Medea escapes to Asia).

The Fate of

Androgeus. :-(
Upon visiting King Aegeus in Athens, he is put in harm's way (by his host). Aegeus sends the youth on a dangerous wild bull hunt and he is killed.

Theseus

Volunteers as a Tribute!
Enraged by the death of his son, Minos invades Athens. He threatens to destroy it unless he given proper tribute (hint, hint, "Hunger Games"):

Every 9 years, Athens must send 14 of its youths (7 virgins and 7 young men) to Crete to be sacrificed in The Labyrinth.
