The Mayan, Aztec, and Incan civilizations emerged in South America, Central America, and Mexico.

Advancements of the Empires

  • Calendars
  • Mathmatics
  • Writing/record keeping

The Mayans

Location: Southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize (rainforests)

Government: groups of city-states ruled by kings

Economy: based on agricultural trade

Religion: polytheistic; built pyramids for their gods/worship

Major Landmark: Chichen Itza

The Aztecs

Location: Central Mexico (mostly desert valley)

Government: Emperor

Economy: agricultural tribute from conquered people (basically taxes)

Religion: Polytheistic (built pyramids; held ritual sacrifices)

Major Landmark: Tenochtitlan

The Incas

Location: Andes Mountains in South America (mostly Peru)

Government: Emperor

Economy: "High-Altitude" agriculture (potatoes, quinoa, Alpacas, llamas, etc.)

Fun Fact: Incans were completely isolated from other societies. Their agriculture are culture was completely unique, and they had no money system

Religion: Polytheistic

Major Landmark: Machu Picchu
