ENTERING THE GLADE

"THOMAS FINALLY GOT HIS FEET UNDER HIM, SCARED ALL OVER AGAIN"
"Thomas finally got his feet under him, scared all over again" (Dashner 10).

Thomas' mind was erased and he was taken into a place called the Glade which was surrounded by four giant walls. Having no memory and being forced into a place that was unknown to him, he was frightened, confused and weak.

FROZEN IN FEAR

"HE FROZE, PANIC OVERTAKING HIM"
"He froze, panic overtaking him" (Dashner 70).

Thomas panicked because something was chasing him. He was not brave or quick to react because as he realized something was chasing him, he froze with fear.

RISKY BUSINESS

"...BACK AGAINST THE ROUGH ROCK, OVERCOME BY DISBELIEF..."
"Thomas leaned back against the rough rock, overcome by disbelief at what he had just done" (Dashner 113).

Thomas ran out of the Glade and into a place called the Maze, which surrounded the Glade. Inside the Maze giant creatures called Grievers came out during the night. If the Grievers saw people, they would try to kill them. During the night, the giant walls of the Glade closed. Thomas got locked out and could not get back in until morning. Although Thomas was a little foolish, he was also brave because he left the Glade to help his friends who were already trapped in the Maze.

EXPRESSIONLESS

"...HE DIDN'T FEEL NEARLY AS PANICKED OR FRIGHTENED..."
"In truth, as Thomas silently watched the commotion, he didn't feel nearly as panicked or frightened as his instincts told him he ought to be" (Dashner 219).

The sun disappeared from the sky and everyone was overwhelmed with fear. Thomas, though, became less frightened by the mysterious events that had been taking place and had gotten used to them.

FEARLESS

"AS BAD AS IT WAS, HE HAD A PLAN"
"All the same, Thomas now had a plan. As bad as it was, he had a plan" (Dashner 291).

Tomas kept trying to find a way out of the Maze even if it meant getting hurt. Thomas was now brave and starting to act heroic.

TRUE LEADER

"...RUNNING AT FULL SPEED, SPEARS AND KNIVES COCKED FOR BATTLE..."
"He sprinted ahead, pulling Teresa behind him, Teresa pulling Chuck behind her, running at full speed, spears and knives cocked for battle..." (Dashner 338).

Thomas and his friends were in a fierce battle with the Grievers and were attempting to escape the Maze. He had now become a true leader and was not scared of anything while leading the charge against the Grievers.
