In the Māori myth, Ranginui The Sky Father and Papatuanuku The Earth Mother had 7 children and they lived closely next to their parents in darkness as there was no light able to shine through.

As the children grew older they argued about being able to see sunlight and decided to tear their parents apart to let the sunlight in. They tried unsuccessfully until one of the children called Tane Mahuta (God of The Trees and Forests) lay back and pushed his parents apart with his bare hands.

The separation greatly upset another of their children called Tawwhirimatea (God of The Weather and Winds) as he did not like seeing his parents crying for each other. He was so upset that he tore out his eyes and threw them into the heavens and now they remain as The Matariki Stars.
