  • Pioneers traveled over the mountians into Kentucky and Tennessee.
  • The pioneers loaded their houshold goods into Conestoga wagons.
  • Many of the pioneers set up farms along rivers that fed into the Upper Mississippi River.

THE FRENCH THREAT

  • For some years, the Spanish allowed American goods to move freely in their territory.
  • The Spanish suddenly changed their policy no longer allowing American goods to move into and beyond New Orleans.

  • Napoleon dreamed of a Western empire.
  • Santo Domingo ended Napoleon's dream.

AN EXPANDING NATION

  • Napoleon needed to finance his war against Britian.
  • When the Louisiana Territory was for sale they agreed on $15 million and Jefferson worried that such a large purchase might not be legal.

LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION

  • Jefferson persuaded Congress to sponser an expedition to gather information about the new land.
  • Jefferson chose Meriwether Lewis to head the expedition.
  • William Clark was co-leader of the expedition.

A FEDERALIST PLAN TO SECEDE

  • The Louisiana Purchase troubled federalists in the Northeast.
  • They feared the westward expansion would weaken New Englands power in political and economic affairs.

HAMILTON AND BURR DUEL

  • Hamilton was concerned about rumors of secession.
  • Burr had secretly agreed to lead New York out of the union.
