WHAT IT WAS LIKE BEFORE

  • The london docklands used to be the busiest port in the world. 
  • In the 1930's 35 million tons of cargo came through
  • And 100,000 dockers worked there

What happened

  • The boats started getting to big for the docks
  • New forms of transport started getting used more e.g. Trucks
  • Containerisation (there was no more need for dockers)
  • people stopped using the docklands

Effects of the L.D. closing

  • Docks became derelict
  • Unemployment grew
  • Terraced housing fell into disrepair
  • Transport links worsened 
  • Services and leisure centres declined

The jobs of the lddc

  • Bringing land and buildings into effective use
  • Encouraging the development of new and existing businesses
  • Creating an attractive environment
  • Ensuring that housing and social facilities are available
  • To encourage people to live in the area 

How the LDDC Fixed it

  • They encouraged people to invest money
  • They encouraged people to buy houses near the Docks 
  • And they built the docklands light railway

nothing is perfect

  • Many jobs now available don't fit the skills of the old dockers 
  • New comers don't mix with the people who originally lived there
  • care homes didn't have enough space for the elderly
