"The habitus is an infinite capacity for generating products - thoughts, perceptions, expressions, actions - whose limits are set by the historically and socially situated conditions of its production" p. 55

  • Internalizing >externalizing

HABITUS

  • Past experiences and encounters produces dispositions
  • Automatic muscle knowledge
  • Oriented towards practical functions
  • Embodied history, internalized as a second nature

CLASS HABITUS

  • History is creating habitus > people with similar history creates a class (group) habitus
  • All follow the same "common sense" without anyone imposing views onto others
  • Creates norms - unconsciously - avoidance of certain things etc.
  • Social trajectories

FIELD

SOCIAL SPACE WITH ITS OWN RULES, VIEWS AND HABITS

FIELD

  • Field where the participants have agreed (unconsciously) upon certain ways of acting etc. "having a feel for the game", common sense
  • The hierarchies of the agents in the field have an impact on life of the fields
  • Belief in crucial to be part of the field
  • The more people who "buys into" the field the more value they create for themselves
  • The earlier agents buy into the field, more symbolic power the high in the hierarchy have.

OBJECTIVISM VS SUBJECTIVISM

"ONE HAS TO RETURN TO PRACTICE, THE SITE OF THE DIALECTIC"

PRACTICE

  • The dialectic between your habitus and the environment.
  • By putting yourself in a discourse you don't fully masters he dialectic creates new stimuli

"Practices is inseparable from temporality not only because it is played out in time, but also because it plays strategically with time and specially with tempo."

PRACTICES

  • Is a part of time, as opposed to the scientific view who don't need time
  • Playing the game vs. looking at the rules
  • Theoretical questions "suspends" the practical
  • "One has no chance of giving a scientific account of practice" p. 82
  • Logic of Practice vs. Logic of Logicians

If the social trajectory is only a result of the habitus, where is your own will and personality? Is there no human agency?

Are influencing everyone else's life but not your own?

Coming here from Brazil, do you join a "Swedish field" or am you creating a new field? Field within a field? How do we in the class create a common field?

Body language is part of the expression of the habitus, but I can also consciously change my body language. Can you effect your own habitus?

How can we "go into practice" at Holmön? How can we find out more about the habitus and field of the island?

How to present the findings of practice when you can't present it scientifically?
