THE LIFE OF CHARLOTTE BRONTË

BACKGROUND INFO

  • Born in 1816 in Thornton, Yorkshire, England.
  • 3rd daughter of the Rev. Patrick Brontë and his wife Maria.
  • Maria and Elizabeth, her older sisters became ill and died in 1825.
  • Her brother Patrick Branwell was born in 1817. Her sisters Emily and Anne in 1818 and 1820.
  • In 1820 the Brontë family moved too Haworth. Mrs. Brontë dying the following year.

EARLY LIFE

  • Charlotte was said to be most ambitious & dominant of the Brontë's.
  • Raised in a strict American home.
  • Raised by her clergyman father and a religious aunt after
  • her mother and two eldest siblings died.
  • She and her sister Emily attended the Clergy Daughter's School at Cowan Bridge.

EARLY LIFE

  • While there with her sisters Maria, Elizabeth and Emily they suffer the harsh regime, cold and poor food.
  • June 1825 Charlotte and her sisters were finally taken away from the school for good.
  • Her two eldest sisters, Maria and Elizabeth died of consumption; the poor conditions while at the school were largely to blame.
  • The experience of Cowan Bridge and the loss of her sisters had an affect on Charlotte.

EARLY LIFE

  • While there with her sisters Maria, Elizabeth and Emily they suffer the harsh regime, cold and poor food.

BOOKS WRITTEN

  • She wrote and published her first book, Jane Eyre, in 1847
  • Jane Eyre was an immediate hit.
  • She followed it with the success of Shirley in 1848
  • And Vilette in 1853

DEATH AND LEGACY

  • The deaths of the Brontë siblings are almost as notable as their literary legacy.
  • Charlotte's brother, Branwell, and Emily died in 1848, and Anne the following year.
  • In 1854, Charlotte married Arther Bell Nicholls.
  • Charlotte died March 31, 1855 during her pregnancy.

DEATH AND LEGACY

  • Charlotte died in Haworth, Yorkshire, England. Due to pneumonia.
  • April 4th 1855 Charlotte Bronte is laid to rest in the family vault at Haworth church.
