WHAT IS FOOD PRESERVATION?

  • Food preservation is basically a way of treating foods so they last a longer time.
  • Some examples of preserved food are pickles and jam.
  • There are many types of food preservation methods.

Why is food preservation so important?

THE ORIGIN STORY

  • Salt
  • Temperature
  • Packaging/Canning
  • Dehydration
  • Freezing

SALT

  • Essential to food preservation because it removes all moisture from the food.
  • It also kills microbes. This ensures that no bacteria can grow on the food to make sure it does not spoil.

COLLECTIVE LEARNING

SHARING INFORMATION

  • Fire burning was considered to be the first form of food preservation.
  • Food preservation techniques quickly spread around the world

BUILDING UPON

  • Jam making was developed in 600 AD to help preserve fruit.
  • Canning was developed to be able to ship foods, such as jam, around the world.

THRESHOLDS

THE EVENTS THAT MADE THE BIGGEST IMPACT

SPACE FOODS

  • Space food is a threshold because it is shaping the future of food preservation.
  • Engineers and researchers at NASA have created a way to store food for months at a time in space.

CANNING

  • Canning was big around the 19th century to store foods and keep them good for long periods of time. It is still being used today.
  • Canning is a threshold because it reshaped the food packaging business. It offered a more safe, cheap, and quality way to transport food.

CHANGE OVER TIME

THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

Untitled Slide

CHANGE & DEVELOPMENT

  • Space food was first introduced to astronauts in the late 1960s, many said it was unappealing.
  • Every space flight after, scientists and chefs designed new foods that were better than the first.

MODERN DAY

  • Some methods of modern food preservation include canning, freezing/freeze drying, and irradiation.
  • These methods were created anywhere during the 20th to 21st century.

FUTURE

  • The future of food preservation is very bright.
  • It involves things such as chemical coatings and even laser ovens!
