AKSUM

TIME PERIOD

  • 500 BC

GEOGRAPHY

  • Axum had a very fertile area since it was located near the nile river,
  • which served as an excellent trade route

RELIGION

  • They were originally polytheistic and believed in many gods that controlled the natural world.
  • The Christian religion became important in many of their lives because of King Ezana
  • They converted to Christianity because of the conversion of King Ezana, around A.D. 330

ADVANCED CITIES

  • People mostly settled in the city of Adulis,
  • due to it's reliable Adulis port.
  • This was because the Roman Empire needed the Adulis port for exporting of gold coins,
  • and Aksumites were the only ones with gold and the crafting skills of gold coins.

SOCIAL STRUCTURE

  • The people were Semites from Yemen. Their jobs were to carry on extensive trade through the Red Sea,
  • which they controlled, to different people such as Greek merchants.
  • The daily lives of Aksumites varied depending on their work.
  • Aksumites worked as merchants, farmes, builders, architects and monks.

GOVERNMENT

  • Axum’s government was strong because it was very successful with dealing with rebellions if they toke place.
  • An example of this was when Ezana became the ruler he quickly dealt with rebellions in violent areas.
  • He did this by creating an army and he separated it into five different regimens.
  • Originally runned by multiple kings, but eventually King Ezana battled to the top of the throne.

WRITING

  • The written language of the kingdom of Aksum was called the Ge'ez Language, a form of Arabic language
  • Modified Arabic language by the Greek and Kushitic languages.
  • Part of why we know so much about Aksum is because the Aksumites preserved their rulers’ written documents.

CONCLUSION

  • The Aksumites were a very sustainable society.
  • They had plenty of resources to last.
