The Importance of Theatre

Theatre 2100: Spring 2015; Wk 1 Lecture 1

In this lecture you will learn about…

  • How theatre is defined
  • What its elements are
  • The cultural functions of theatre
  • What theatrical conventions are

What is Theatre?

In the video link below, we see many recognizable elements of theatre- trained performers enacting a story, a stage area, costumes, props, an audience…while it may seem different from a “typical” theatre performance, the Barong Dance certainly qualifies as theatre.

The video links below--the convening of the 112th US Congress, and the final minutes of the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” hockey match between the US and USSR- are also examples of theatre performance.

According to the book, The Necessity of Theater, theatre is a dramatic action performed by live people with/for an audience in a measured time and space.

The Art of the Now describes theatre as "a transaction between its creators...and audience."

  • Trials
  • Sporting Events
  • Protests
  • Much more!

Theatre is storytelling in real time, and fulfills a number of functions in a culture.

The video link below is a clip from Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, performed at the Globe Theatre in London, which has been designed to match the experience of how the play would have been watched and performed in 17th century England.

“There is only one interesting difference between the cinema and the theatre. The cinema flashes on to a screen images from the past… The theatre, on the other hand, always asserts itself in the present. This is what can make it more real than the normal stream of consciousness. This also is what can make it so disturbing.” (Peter Brook)

Theatre is NOW; Film is THEN

End of Lecture!

  • What is necessary for theatre to occur?
  • How does the purpose of theatre change across cultures?
  • What can theatre do that film or tv can't?
  • How do conventions change for different kinds of theatre?
