WHAT IS The human genome project?

  • A project that began in 1990 and ended in 2001
  • Its purpose is to sequence all of the DNA base letters

WHAT IS THE HUMAN GENOME PROJECT'S PURPOSE?

  • Finding cures for people with genetic diseases
  • To help detect diseases earlier before symptoms appear

HOW WAS THE GENOME CRACKED?

  • Three things helped crack the genome:
  • The order of the DNA bases
  • Maps that show genes in big sections
  • Linkage maps

HOW WILL THE GENOME HELP?

  • The assembled three billion chemical letters will give a set of instructions and with that, scientists will be able to comprehend the basics of understanding and treating humans

HUMAN GENOME GOALS

  • Decoding every base, letter by letter
  • Being able to tell patients what they are at risks for
  • Using best treatments for each individual
  • Being able to make more antibiotics

the future of genomics

  • The average life span will be from 90-95 years old
  • Clinical practices will be able to use genome sequencing to help diagnose patients
  • There will be customized treatments for specific types of illnesses
