HOW AND WHY IT WAS BUILT

How and why was it built

  • It was built for Pharaoh Khufu.
  • It was said that Khufu treated his workers well.
  • Some workers were paid by radishes, garlic, and onions because these foods were hard to get.
  • Around 20,000 people worked on it.

  • The pyramid took nearly 20 years to complete.
  • It was the tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800 years until a spire was built on the Lincoln Cathedral in England in 1300.

  • The structure consists of an estimated 2.3 million stone blocks, weighing up to fifteen tons each.
  • The pyramid's base is 754 feet (230 meters) wide.
  • It stood at 481 feet or 146.3 meters tall.
  • The Great Pyramid of Giza is the largest of the ancient Egyptian pyramids.

  • Inside, there are three burial chambers: The Queen's Chamber, the Grand Gallery, and at the highest point in the center, The King's Chamber.
  • The Grand Gallery is a large passageway around 153 ft. long, 7 feet wide, and 29 feet high.
  • No treasure was found inside the pyramid. It was likely looted by grave robbers over a thousand years ago.
