Bernard Green was 26 when the First World War broke out in 1914.

He transferred to the Machine Gun Corps and took part in the Battle of Somme , in 1916.

In 1940, Bernard was posted RAF Waddington with the rank of Flight Lieutenant and trained as a rear gunner in Bomber Command.

His bomber was shot down off the Coast of Denmark.

Bernard was captured and moved camp to camp, before ending up in a concentration camp in Sagan,Poland.

He escaped on March 25 , 1943, but was captured later that evening.

Bernard Green died at age 84 in 1971.
