PRESENTATION OUTLINE

BACKGROUND

  • The king revoked charters in English towns, rejected parliament's advice, and practiced Roman Catholicism openly
  • Whig Party invited William of Orange to come to England in an invading army to erase the prospect of having a Catholic heir to the English throne

GLORIOUS REVOLUTION IN ENGLAND

  • William led a coup that was almost bloodless and overthrew King James II
  • King William and Mary were forced to accept the Declaration of Rights
  • Gave more power to House of Commons
  • Whigs wanted political power

GLORIOUS REVOLUTION IN AMERICA

  • Rebellions by Protestant colonists
  • Americans complained of Authoritarian rule, Dominion of New England broken up by monarchs
  • Rebellion had economic and religious causes in Maryland, falling tobacco prices hurt farmers since 1660
  • Taxes continued to rise and they were paid to Catholic Proprietary officials

GLORIOUS REVOLUTION IN AMERICA

  • Parliament association ousted Catholic governor when Parliament got rid of James II
  • The Lords of Trade agreed with the decisions of the Protestants and imposed royal government after suspending the proprietorship of Lord Baltimore
  • However, all changed when Benedict Calvert converted to the Anglican faith, propriety restored to Calvert family

AFTERMATH
