Characters

  • Jonas- Jonas is the main character of the book. He is a very sensitive twelve year old boy. At the December Ceremony Jonas gets the honor of being the new Receiver of Memory.
  • Fiona- Fiona is one of Jonas's good friends who is extremely quiet and polite.
  • Asher- Asher is Jonas's best friend. He is cheerful and has a Reckless personality.

Characters to keep an Eye on

  • Mother- Jonas's mother is a very gentle and loving mother who cares very much for Jonas
  • Father- Jonas's father is a shy and gentle man who is a Nurturer
  • The Giver- The Giver is the current receiver of memory who trains Jonas
  • Gabe (Gabriel)- Gabriel is an infant that Jonas's family takes in and he plays a large role in their families life.

Setting

  • The setting of this book is in a controlled society some time in the future and there is no music , suffering, hunger, or fun. In other words, this is a pretty boring place to hang out or live, but the author keeps you intrigued with the descriptive words he uses .

Summary

  • The summary of this book is that there is a twelve year old boy named Jonas. Everything is Controlled by the Elders down to who you marry and who your children are that you receive. Everybody is the same in the world and to get released is a huge deal. (Read the book to find out what being released is).

  • In the beginning of the book Jonas is Eleven, but only for a short amount of time because the December ceremony is coming up. At the December Ceremony the twelves get there assignments such as being caretaker for the old, or being a Nurturer. At the Ceremony Everybody gets called except Jonas...

You should read this book because it has dramatic scenes such as... and a great use of vocabulary. The book also has a great Climax and very mysterious parts such as why did he do that? And why does this person have to do this?

  • I would give this book a five out of five rating because of the way the author uses his descriptive words in the text and the tone of the book is excruciatingly good.
