Role of NJ Sharing Network

Introduce who NJ Sharing Network is:
Organ Procurement Organization (OPO)
Private, Non-profit Service Organization
Federally Designated
Available 24 hours/7 days a week
Arrange for the recovery of all organs and tissue for transplantation.
Other details: located in New Providence, NJ – covering the 14 northern counties of NJ – each state has a designated OPO and some states have more then one (i.e. NJSN and Gift of Life)

Why Donation Matters

Over 125k people waiting for a tx
One organ donor can save up to 8 lives
One tissue donor can enhance 50-75 lives

CMS Conditions of Participation

  • Organ Donation: All imminent deaths are referred within 1-hour
  • Tissue Donation: All deaths are referred within 1-hour
  • Any approach for donation MUST be done in collaboration with NJSN
  • NJSN determines medical suitability

Referral Process

  • Tissue Donors: Call within 1-hour of cardio-respiratory death
  • Organ Donors: (Vented Patients) Call within 1-hour of GCS

Organ Donation Evaluation

  • Determine medical suitability
  • Assess family understanding of grave prognosis and death
  • Discuss plans for donation conversation

NJ Brain Death Regulations

  • Clinical Exam with an Apnea Test (2 exams, 6-hours apart for patients >12-months)
  • Confirmatory Exam (Nuclear Brain Flow Scan)

Procurement to Transplant

  • Moment of Silence
  • Thoracic Organs (2-6 hours)
  • Abdominal Organs (up to 48-hours)
  • Medical Examiner and Funeral Home Arrangements
