PRESENTATION OUTLINE

The Evolution of Slavery

By Paige Robinson

Beginnings of slave trade: early 1600s- mid 1600s. 1636: the first American slave carrier ( a ship named desire) is built and american slave trade begins

Initially, white indentured servants were majority of labor force and were treated as badly as the African slaves.

Due to prosperity in England, white indentured servants became too expensive so America turns to Africa for cheap agricultural labor.

Slavery becomes prevalent and legal
1643-1650s = states legalize slave trading and slavery as an institution and pass fugitive laws.
General trend: slavery becomes more accepted and harder to escape

Treatment of slaves:
Slaves = property, Treated cruelly especially during slave ship passage ( the middle passage)

1662-67 = states prohibit rights of black men and women
-slavery becomes a hereditary condition
-christianity is no longer a pathway to freedom
-mostly associated with color

Life as a slave: language and music reflect african roots

Religion becomes a big part of life, especially the theme of breaking free and escaping your chains (applied literally to slaves)

Families were often brutally torn apart through slave trade.

Subtle rebellion = not following rules

Outward rebellion ( Bacon's Rebellion) Nat turner's rebellion 1831 = both resulted in stronger, harsher laws

1808 = slave importation becomes illegal. But it persists.
