The Ethics of Teaching

How to be a good teacher, literally

What are Ethics?

  • "The moral principals that govern a persons behavior"
  • In short, ethics tell you to do the right thing

What does this have to do with me?(Legally)

  • You have to do what is right in the laws eyes
  • It's bad to get sued; I wouldn't recommend it
  • Typically, legal requirements and ethical requirement are both the same
  • So avoid legal trouble and do the right thing!

What does this have to do with me? (Ethically)

  • As a teacher, you are in a position of power
  • Kids look up to you, you have authority
  • By doing the right thing, you are showing the kids how to as well
  • As a teacher, it is your job to both educate the kids and take care of them
  • Why not do both by showing them how to be morally good?

What dominates a teachers ethical practice?

  • Professionalism: Act right, be professional, do not sleep with the kids
  • Best interest of the students
  • Promotion of learning and growth

What can be considered "unethical"?

  • Using grades to punish the kids(Getting an f for talking)
  • Raging in the classroom(No one likes hulk when he's angry, so dont rage)
  • Trying to trick kids on a test(Not cool bro)

What are the consequences of being unethical?

  • Break the trust between teacher and student
  • Students lose respect for you quickly
  • If it is bad enough, you may just find yourself out of a job

What happens in the school?

  • You will face various ethical dilemmas in school
  • Things pop up all the time, and you will have to respond to them
  • It is important that you are able to do so

Ethical Dilemmas??

  • Times come up where you won't know all the facts but have to respond
  • There might also simply not be an answer that is completely right
  • It is important that you are able to see beyond the short term consequence
  • You have to have foresight in order to respond well

Conclusion

  • These issues will pop up at some point
  • You just have to be able to know what is the "best" outcome
  • Not everyone will agree with you, and that is ok
  • Just make sure to always make the ethical choice, and it will all work out
