The Rough ER
⭐Background⭐️

The rough endoplasmic reticulum is located next to the nuclear membrane in the cell and consists of a membranett covered in ribosomes.

The Rough ER
⭐️Function⭐️

The rough ER is the site of proteins synthesis, which is conducted by the ribosomes connected to it. The rough ER helps the proteins stay organized.

The Smooth ER
⭐️Background⭐️

The smooth ER also consists of a series of interconnected membrane tubes, but has no ribosomes connected to it. It is located inside the cytoplasm.

The Smooth ER
⭐️Function⭐️

The main function of the smooth ER is synthesizing the lipids used in the cell membrane.

⭐️Benefits of the ER⭐️

The ER system allows lipids to assemble and form, and works closely with the Golgi apparatus and the ribosomes as a packing system.

⭐️More Benefits of the ER⭐️

The ER system also serves as a location for the proteins-synthesizing ribosomes, and directs molecules towards single places. It also sends proteins to the Golgi apparatus.

Losing the ER
⭐️Consequences⭐️

Protein synthesis would not occur due to the ribosomes required for it being located in the rough ER.

⭐️More Consequences⭐️

Also, because the smooth ER produces lipids and steroids like cholesterol for the plasma membrane, without it, the plasma membrane, and the cell itself, would collapse.
