While waiting for his wife, Austrian princess Marie-Louise, to join him in exile, Emperor Napoleon becomes attracted to Sofia, the local bordello owner, relying on her to help him govern the island of Elba and spy on his enemies who are determined to have him killed.
The story is thoroughly researched and based on historical events. However their is no specific mention of a woman named Sophia. She is a composite character that is based on Napoleon’s well documented use of courtesans and prostitutes to assist him with espionage.
SYNOPSIS The Allied rulers of Europe exile a defeated and suicidal Napoleon to Elba. Knowing he shall have full authority on the island and that his wife, the Austrian princess Marie-France, is to eventually join him, Napoleon's spirits are raised. He resigns himself to living a quiet life.
The exiled Emperor's arrival, along with a loyal battalion of over eight hundred guards, provides Sofia, the island's fiery, independent, politically astute brothel owner, an opportunity to expand her business.
With sparks igniting, Sofia and Napoleon strike a deal. She can purchase a new, larger bordello in return for her help in spying on British Colonel Neil Campbell, the soldier charged with preventing Napoleon's escape. Sofia enlists one of her former courtesans to seduce and gather information from Neil.
The Allies, fearing a possible return of Napoleon, hatch a secret plan to prevent Marie-France from joining him on Elba. A dashing Austrian cavalry officer, Count Neipperg, is dispatched to seduce her and convince her to abandon her exiled husband. An assassin secretly arrives on the island as well.
As he waits for his wife's arrival, Napoleon and Sofia's lustful yearnings for each other grow. Sofia's plans for improving the island’s poorest inhabitants are embraced and enacted by the Emperor. Their mutual desire erupts into a passionate affair. Though aware of Napoleon's past cruelty, Sofia is attracted to a man dedicated to a life of passion, adventure and destiny.
The courtesan intercepts Neil's messages and learns of Marie-France succumbing to the temptations of Count Neipperg. She conveys to Sofia the Allies' new plan to transport Napoleon to the barren, isolated island of Saint Helen's.
Sofia rushes to warn Napoleon, arriving just in time to shoot the secret assassin. Napoleon reveals his cruel, ruthless character and coldly informs Sofia of his own secret plan to escape Elba without her and reclaim his former glory in France.
“It must be recognized that the real truths of history are hard to discover. Happily, for the most part, they are rather matters of curiosity than of real importance.”
