The Editing Process

I chose to do my presentation on the editing process. I am aspiring to be a writer but first I would like to start out as an editor. In order to do that, I must familiarize myself the editing process and what it takes to be an editor.

What is editing?

  • Prepare material (written) for publication
  • Correction, condensation, organization, etc.
  • Bring a work to its final stage
First we'll go over what editing entails. Editing is the final preparation of any material for publication. In this presentation we will be focusing on editing for written material. Editing can include ensuring grammar use is correct, condensing material by taking over-wordy or unnecessary pieces out, and organizing paragraphs and thoughts in a way that makes sense and reads well. Basically, the editing process is the step that brings a piece of writing to its final stage where it is ready to be published.

Why edit?

  • Fix errors
  • Professional
  • Writing works edited several times before publication
So why is editing important? An author doesn't generally write something and send it off for publication instantly unless they like the feeling of rejection. Editing is necessary to get rid of errors that include typos, grammar issues, word use, and other such issues. Authors and writers aim for perfection when they write because they want to be seen as professionals who know what they're talking about. In fact editing is so important, magazine, book, and newspaper publishing industries have several positions for editors all responsible for ensuring that whatever they intend to publish is proofread to perfection.

Acquisition Editor

Contracts with author to produce copy
Since I am interested in writing books, I will most likely be searching for an editing position that deals with bound books. We'll focus on the editing positions within the book publishing industry. The first editor is the Acquisition Editor. Much like the title suggests, this editor is responsible for acquiring material from the author under a contract so that copy may be produced.

Project Editor

Supervises manuscript, budget, and schedule
The Project Editor is the editor responsible for the manuscripts publication and sees that copy through until it is in bound book form. The Project Editor is also responsible for setting the budget to produce the book, and creating a schedule for the book's publication.

Copy Editor

Converts to printed form
The Copy Editor, also known as the Manuscript Editor, is the one responsible for converting the manuscript copy into printed form. These are the editors who do the proofreading and look for errors in a manuscript. There are even freelance Copy Editors that publishing industries outsource to in order to have their work properly edited.

Author

Most important editor
Before a manuscript is even seen by any editor however, it must pass the writer's expectations. The author of a writing piece is the most important editor as they are responsible for knowing how the text is supposed to read, sound, flow, and feel. If the author fails to edit their manuscript, they cannot hope to ever reach the stage of publication.
