  • Colony was a self-governing colony
  • Was most well-known for religious toleration

The Settlements? What Type?

  • Were mostly cities and large towns
  • Most notable were Providence, Portsmouth, Newport, Pocasset, Pawtuxet, and Warwick

Types of People

  • Most of the settlers were English at first
  • Later settlers were of mixed religion due to the colony offering religious toleration

  • Roger Williams was one of the most important people
  • Others were Anne Hutchinson, William Coddington, and John Clarke
  • An important native American chief named Metacomet, also known as King Phillip

  • Colony officially founded 163
  • Portsmouth Compact was signed in 1638

A Truly Unique Rhode Island

  • Home to the first synagogue in America, established in Newport
  • The area was actually scattered as early as 1620, before it was officially founded

  • The geography is mostly flat, with a few rolling hills
  • Soil was mostly poor, so fishing and shipbuilding were large industries
