How Was Delaware Started?

  • Settled by the Swedes
  • Delaware was called New Sweden originally
  • Dutch took over in 1665 and Delaware joined New Netherlands
  • Became part of the Thirteen Colonies when English took over

GOVERNMENT
-Proprietary Colony with its own assembly
-Governed by Pennsylvania governor until it became a separate colony

People in Delaware

The Swedes settled in Delaware. Dutch and English came later.

Ceaser Rodney made an important ride to Philadelphia to make sure that Delaware declared its independence along with the other states.

Peter Minuit was an important person in Delaware because he made the most important land purchase in United States history. Also, he led the first group of settlers in New Sweden.

DELAWARE IMPORTANT EVENTS

- Delaware's assembly met in 1704 for the first time
-Introduced log cabins to America
-Didn't become a separate colony from Pennsylvania until 1776

Uniqueness of Delaware

  • Had their own assembly. Didn’t have their own governor or colony.
  • Named three times (New Sweden, New Netherlands and Delaware).
  • Gave way to religious freedom for Quakers, Catholics, Lutherans, Jews, and others.
  • Delaware was named after Lord De La Warr.
