1945

THE YALTA CONFERENCE (THE COLD WAR BEGINS)

  • Held February 4-11, 1945
  • Purpose was to discuss post-war reorganization of Europe
  • Each representative had their own agenda for their personAl gains
  • Roosevelt wanted soviet participation in war against Japan and in the United Nations
  • Churchill suggested free elections and a democratic government for the ussr
  • Stalin demanded control of poland and communist political influence
  • Stalin caused tensions between both the us and britain by not following through on the proposition of free elections, therefore spreading communism throughout eastern europe

1945

THE US DROPS THE FIRST ATOM BOMB ON JAPAN, ENDING WW2

  • August 6, 1945
  • President Truman felt invading Japan would result in numerous American casualties
  • He ordered the atomic bomb to be utilized
  • The first bomb, carried by the enola Gay, obliterated 4 square miles of the city of Hiroshima, Japan, killing 80,000 people
  • The second bomb, dropped three days later on the city of Nagasaki, again leveled 4 square miles, killing 40,000 people
  • Japan surrendered two days after the second bombing
  • Not only was the bomb used to end the war with Japan, but also to show the Soviets the powers of mass destruction that the United States Obtained
  • This started the build up of nuclear weapons by both the US and The Soviets
  • Some historians believe that the dropping of these A-bombs was the true start of the Cold War

1946

WINSTON CHURCHILL DELIVERS THE IRON CURTAIN SPEECH

  • On March 5, 1946, Winston Churchill delivered his Iron Curtain Speech
  • In his speech, he condemned the Soviets for their communist politics and expansion
  • Churchill also called for a strengthened relationship with the United States (The English-Speaking World)
  • Stalin saw this speech as a message of hostility
  • The US officials worried about being used as a pawn to help the crumbling British Empire
  • This speech brought about tensions between all three powers (Us, Ussr, and Great Britain), further igniting the Cold War

1947

PRESIDENT TRUMAN INTRODUCES THE TRUMAN DOCTRINE

  • Declared on March 12, 1947
  • This was a US policy to halt Soviet expansion during the Cold War
  • Truman pledged to contain communist expansion and eliminate any threats of communism in free territories
  • This became the Us foreign policy and also established numerous military alliances
  • Gave aid to greece and turkey, angering stalin for he wanted to expand communism into those areas

THE U.S. ANNOUNCES THE MARSHALL PLAN

  • Announced on june 5, 1949
  • Also known as the European Recovery Program
  • The US pledged seventeen billion dollars to europe to rebuild after WWII
  • Main goal was to prevent communist expansion in all parts of europe, which further angered stalin
