Containment

U.S. policy of attempting to restrict soviet power and influence around the world by preventing the spread of communism.

Marshall Plan

A U.S. aid plan designed a promote economic recovery in Europe after World War II.

NATO

A mutual defense pact formed by western nations in 1949.

Warsaw Pact

A 1955 defense pact between the USSR and Eastern European nations.

Arms Race

A competition to achieve weapons superiority.

Cultural Revolution

A period of revolutionary upheaval and political persecution in China from 1966 to 1976.

Korea War

War from 1950-1953, between communist North Korea and non-communist South Korea. Involved Soviet Union and Chinese support for North and the U.S. For the South.

Vietnam war

War between north and south Vietnam from early 1950's to 1975.

Domino Theory

Belief that the Vietnam fell to the communists, the rest of Asia would fall like a row of dominoes.

Covert action


a secret action undertaken to influence the course of political events, as a government intelligence operation.


Detente

The easing of Cold War tensions and hostility between east and west during the 1970's.

Deterrence

The policy of building a weapons arsenal do deadly that no other nation will dare to attack.
