PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Superpower- an extremely powerful nation, one of a very few dominant states in an era when the world is divided politically into these states and their satellites.
United Nations- an international organization founded in 1945 to promote peace, security, and cooperation among the world's nations.
Iron Curtain- the ideological barrier the divided Eastern and Western Europe during the Cold War.
Containment- the U.S. policy of attempting to restrict Soviet power and influence around the world by preventing the spread of communism.
Marshall Plan- a U.S. aid plan designed to promote economic recovery in Europe after World War 1.
NATO- a mutual defense pact formed by Western nations in 1949.
Warsaw Pact- in 1955 defense pact between USSR and a Eastern European nations.
Arms Race- a competition to achieve weapons superiority.
Cultural Revolution- a period of revolutionary upheaval and political persecution in China from 1966 to 1976.
Korea War- a war from 1950 to 1953 between communist North Korea and non-communist South Korea that involved Soviet and Chinese support for the North and U.S. and UN support for the South.
Viet Cong- communist insurgents in South Vietnam.
Vietnam War- the war between the North and South Vietnam from the early 1950s to 1975.
Domino Theory- the belief that if Vietnam fell to the communists, the rest of Asia would fall likea row of dominoes.
Covert Action- a secret political, economic, or military operation sponsored by a government and designed to support a foreign policy objective.
Détente- the easing of Cold War tensions and hostility between East and West during the 1970s.
Deterrence- the policy of building weapons arsenal so deadly that no other nation will dare attack.
