ORIGINS OF THE COLD WAR

  • Started after WWII
  • Diminishing ties between the Soviet Union and US
  • Both came out as Superpowers, took over wrecked Europe
  • Conflicted on economic and political systems
  • US favored Capitalism and Soviet Union Communism

HOW "COLD WAR" GOT ITS NAME

  • although the US and Soviets had military conflicts
  • They didn't engage in direct conflict
  • Always avoided a direct clash of arms
  • So came to be called COLD WAR

CAPITALISM VS. COMMUNISM

  • Capitalism has free market and private ownership
  • Communism has government controlled economy
  • Almost no privately owned business
  • Capitalism included liberalism, peoples right
  • Communism enforced suppression, no civil rights

US FOREIGN POLICY

SOVIET RESPONSE TO US CONTAINMENT

  • Soviet response evolved into 2 counterstrategies
  • Support for wars of liberation or colonial revolution
  • Attainment of military parity w/ US & allies
  • Both had major consequences
