There were many battles fought in the Civil War, but these 5 Union wins changed the outcome of the war.

May 1863
The battle of Gettysburg
This was the largest battle ever fought on North American Soil.

The Battle Of Shiloh
On April 6, 1862, Confederate men attacked a line of Union soldiers off the Tennessee river. The following battle was only two days long, but it earned its name as the bloodiest Civil War battle.

Sherman's March to the Sea
On December 22, 1864, General Sherman of the Union forced the confederate army out of Savannah GA. After more than 20 days of marching through and burning towns, this was a great victory.

Surrender at Appomattox
General Sherman continued with the burning of the South, all the way through North Carolina.

Sherman was stopped briefly by the southern general Lee. Sherman broke the line however, and seized Pittsburgh PA on April 2, 1865.

On April 9, 1865, General Lee surrendered. He agreed to sign the surrender treaties issued by general Sherman in the Appomattox Court House.

The confederates won all the first wars, but then the Union started having more Victories. These 5 are the first battles, and the Confederates only victories.

The Battle Of Bull Run
On July 21, 1861, Confederate and Union met in one of the first battles ever fought in the Civil War. Each side had 18,000 poorly trained young men.

Battle Of Seven Pines
On May 31, 1862, General Joseph E. Johnston of the confederates tried to over run Union troops in Virginia. General George B. McClellan of the Union called in for reinforcements, and the Union position was stabilized. Both sides claimed victory.

Battle Of Fredericksburg
December 11-15, 1862
This battle was remembered as a very one sided battle, with the Union casualties almost twice as much as Confederate.

Seven Days Battle
June 25-July 1, 1862
The Seven Days Battle was a series of 6 major battles. The Union general McClellan started the first battle, but quickly lost his advantage as the Confederate general Lee began a series of attacks. This battle took place near Richmond, Virginia.

Battle Of Wilsons Creek
August 10, 1861
This was one of the first major battle in the Civil War. It was also the resting place for Nathaniel Lyon, the first Union general to be killed during a battle.

Most Civil War soldiers marched 15-20 miles a day

In a single day, the 1 million horses in the Civil War would have peed enough urine to fill 12 standard swimming pools! 😝

When the southern states seceded in 1860-1861, the did not go in order such as geographic location or level of industrialization. They left in the order of percentage of slaves.

The South thought that they would win because 1) Northerners did not know their way around the South, where most of the fighting would happen 2) Southern farmers were already skilled horse riders and marksmen,

and 3) they were trying to save a way of life.

Northerners thought they would win because 1) they had more men to fight with, 2) there were more factories in the North to make guns and ammo, and 3) the North had more railroads to transport supplies.
