The Biomes

By Michelle Randall

The Tundra

  • The tundra is the coldest biome. It's located up north.
  • This is the "treeless flat land" biome.
  • Although there is a lot of snow, there is not a lot of precipitation.
  • The lowest temperature it can get to is around -37°F in the winter.
  • The highest temperature in the summer is around 54°F.

Permafrost

Permafrost is where the soil is permanently frozen. This is in the Tundra.

The Taiga

  • The taiga is located right under the tundra.
  • Taiga is the Russian word for "forest"
  • It is the largest biome on land.
  • The temperature here in the summer is 20°F to 70°F
  • The precipitation here is 12-33 inches.

Temperate DECIDUOUS Forest

  • This biome is under the taiga.
  • It is located on the right half of North America and the middle of Europe.
  • This is the only biome that has four seasons (spring, summer, fall, winter)
  • The average temperature is 50°F.
  • The average annually rainfall is 30 to 60 inches.

Animal Life In The Forest

  • Deer
  • Mosquitoes
  • Snakes
  • Squirrels

Grassland

  • This is located under the temperate deciduous forest.
  • Grasslands are flat, dry areas.
  • In the winter, the temperature can go as low as -40°F.
  • In the summer, the temperature can go as high as 70°F.
  • Unlike the temperate deciduous forest, the grassland only has 2 seasons.

Vegetation in the Grassland

  • Grass
  • Trees and shrubs struggle to grow in the grassland.
  • Sunflowers
  • Wild Indigos

Animal Life in the Grassland

  • The grassland doesn't have a wide variety, but they have a lot of animals.
  • Bison
  • Prairie Dogs
  • Zebras
  • Lions

Wildfires in Grasslands

  • Natural and man made wildfires are important.
  • When the fire burns down the fire-intolerant trees and shrubs, it gives
  • more room for fire-tolerant plants to grow.
  • The grass survives this because it grows underground.

Desert

  • The desert is located under the grasslands.
  • The desert is hot and dry.
  • The temperature is usually 20-25°C
  • The average annual rainfall here is 15-26 cm.

  • These plants are adapted to the hot weather here.
  • Barrel Cactus
  • Palm Trees
  • Joshua Tree
  • Desert Primrose

  • Coyote
  • Desert Tortoise
  • Camels
  • Rhinoceros

Tropical Rain Forest

  • The rain forest is under the desert.
  • You can find it in South America, Africa, and South Asia.
  • It has a tropical, wet climate.
  • It doesn't get much hotter than 93°F or colder than 68°F.
  • Every year, it gets an average og 50 to 260 inches of rainfall.

Vegetation in the rain forest

  • Epiphytes
  • Ceiba Tree
  • Orchids
  • Canopy Trees
  • Liana

  • Tarantula
  • Macaw
  • Monkey

Marine

  • The marine biome is the biggest in the world, covering 70% of the earth.
  • The average of all the oceans is about 39°F.
  • This biome provides rain for crops for other biomes through evaporation.
  • There are 5 oceans, the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Southern, and Arctic
  • This biome has lots and lots of salt!

Plant life in the marine

  • There are over 1 million species.
  • 9 million are yet to be discovered!
  • Marine plants and algae provides most of the world's oxygen.
  • Kelp
  • Phytoplankton

Freshwater

  • This biome does not have salt in it. (Hence the name)
  • This consists of ponds, lakes, and rivers.
  • The freshwater flows into the marine biome.
  • Only 3% of Earth's water comes from freshwater.
