WHY WAS IT BUILT?

• To keep East German refuges escaping into West Germany
• The refugees escaping made communism look bad
• The only solution to prevent war between the USA & USSR

KEY FEATURES/EVENTS

• It was built August 13 1961
• The Berlin Wall was 96m long & was 3.6 metres tall
• There were two walls seperated by the "death stip"
• The "death strip" was a machine gun strip between the two walls

CONSEQUENCES

• It stopped nuclear war between Russia & America
• Refuges stopped escaping from East Germany
• The East kept skilled workers
• The red telephone was brought in
