  • Anthony Patch keeps referring to his crotchety old grandfather that sent him off to college
  • He also takes about his time in the military.

AGAIN AND AGAIN

  • Wealth is a word used a lot. In the twenties wealth was a big thing because of the stock market. Everyone wanted to be wealthy.

WORDS OF THE WISER

  • The main character often talks to his older Friedman who is an author. They usually talk about how Anthony needs to get married and settle down. That way he can get his part of the will faster.

TOUGH QUESTIONS

  • He has a tough time deciding if he is actually ready to marry settle down. Also alcohol makes him ask a lot of questions, like is he happy with his life. Anthony wonders how he is going to live without money after he finds he is not in the will.

AHA MOMENTS

  • Anthony realizes that he is not in the will. This leads to alcoholism.
  • His wife also drinks a lot and they struggle to be happy without money. They just drink because they are bored.

CONTRASTS AND CONTRADICTIONS

  • Gloria and Anthony actually loved each other. Usually this author makes people marry people they don't love.
  • In the beginning Anthony isn't really a mess but when he marries his life begins to fall apart even though they are happy with each other.
