The battle took place in Heinrich county, Virginia. Also, Darbytown, strawberry plains,new market road,and gravel hill.

The importance was to search for ways to thin and break the confederate lines around the vital city. Also, as it says on the website "The operation was meant to draw Confederates away from the Petersburg trenches before Grant ignited a huge mine below the fortifications and launched a new assault."

In this battle there were about 1067 casualties. A strategy they used was they bombed a mine. There were 28200 forces engaged.

The campaign was the Richmond-Petersburg campaign. Confederates followed water source of baileys creek.

The confederates won this battle in the end.
