BAND SAW SAFETY

  • Operate only with instructor's permission.
  • Remove jewelry, eliminate loose clothing and confine long hair.
  • Make sure all guards are on and in working condition.
  • Always wear eye protection.
  • Make sure all adjustments are tight and secure and the blade guards are properly adjusted.
  • Upper blade guard should be positioned 1/8" above the work piece.
  • Guide work slowly, let the machine do the work, do not force the work.
Review each safety step and explain each.

Correct procedures for using the band saw

  • Do not attempt to cut smaller radius than the blade will allow.
  • Avoid backing out of a cut.
  • Place fingers and hands on each side of the cut line, never on the line. Use a scrap push block if necessary.
  • Never leave the machine until it has come to a complete stop.
Notice the positions of this person's hands. They are not in the cutting line, away from the blade.

REVIEW QUESTIONS

  • The lower wheel does not require a guard.
  • The upper guide should be adjusted to within 1/8" of the work piece.
  • All normal adjustments should be made with the power off.
  • It is permissible and safe to force martial around tight radius.
  • Fingers should be positioned on each side of the cut line while the material is guided through the machine.
  • When necessary it is possible to back slowly out of a cut.
Review these questions with the students. Ask them to describe their answer.
