  • 9,000 pounds
  • Uranium-type bomb
  • First atomic bomb to be used in war
  • 15 kilotons or 15,000 tons of TNT

  • At 7:30 a.m. there was an air raid alarm
  • Just a weather plane

THE BOMBING

  • Occurred at 8:15 AM
  • 45-second drop time
  • Exploded around 1,900 feet over the center of the city

THE BOMBING (PT 2)

  • 9,000-degree heat
  • 1,000-mph winds
  • 1,200-feet-per-second heat waves
  • Destroyed almost everything within one mile from ground zero

LONG-TERM EFFECTS

RADIOACTIVE DISEASES

  • Killed 100,000
  • Caused face deformation, skin removal, and hair loss
  • 3-4 weeks after the bombing the most deaths occurred
  • 7-8 weeks after the bombing was when the least deaths occurred
  • 52 out of 55 hospitals were destroyed
