THE WORD ATOM

  • The word atom comes from the Greek language
  • The Greek word "atomos" means indivisible
  • Democritus, a Greek Philosopher, coined the term atom

THREE MAIN PARTS OF AN ATOM

  • Protons-positively charged particles
  • Neutrons-particles that have no charge
  • Electrons-negatively charged particles

THE NUCLEUS

  • The nucleus-the center of the atom
  • This is where the protons and neutrons are found in an atom

  • The electrons shell is where the electrons are located in an atom
  • The electrons buzz around the nucleus very quickly
