Networking Should Be:

  • Reciprocal
  • Ongoing
  • Mutually-beneficial
  • Intentional and strategic
  • A method to help create opportunities, solve problems and achieve goals
The key, I learned about networking, is to approach networking as a way to help others, not just yourself.
“What’s in it for me?” is a common thought when thinking about how to advance beyond the status quo, however I suggest the networking is actually truly about giving! You must leave a “Positive Wake”, which is simply leaving someone with something great about you and the encounter.
Friendraising
“Networking really is about building friendships, they’re just friends you happen to do work with and that’s just a better life when you get to do the things you really care about with the people you really care about.”

The Art of Preparation

Connecting Ideas and Finding Deeper Insight
What is taking shape? What is your major insight so far?

You are both going through a ritual to identify common ground – looking for something in which you share an interest. Be yourself

Ask compelling questions. “Questions are your best friend because every time you ask a question, it opens another door to talk about things,”. The goal of networking is not to impress other people. It’s about getting to know others and making lasting relationships. By asking questions, you get to know a little more about them and make a connection.
Questions keeps the space open. Ask executives, ‘How can I develop in my career?’ or ‘How to step up to the next level?’ And when it’s your turn to talk, remember quality over quantity: be the person who says the most interesting thing, not the most things.”

The Art of Adding Value

Listen from genuine curiosity, welcoming the expression of thoughts, opinions, and especially feelings. When we listen with our whole selves to more than the words, people feel heard and their energy moves into new channels, naturally weaving connection.

  • How do your personal assests help in these roles
  • What are the challenges to taking on this role? Why?

The Art of the Close

Create Forward Movement
How can we support each other taking the next steps?
