DESCRIPTION

  • The first olympics was in 776 bc, invented by the Ancient Greeks , soon after in 394 ad the Ancient Romans joined
  • The Olympics were played and held every 4 years
  • At first the Olympics were performed in 1 day, this was then changed to 5 as more events were added and participants. Meaning they couldn't fit the numbers in a short period

  • leonidas
  • He was born in 188 bc
  • He was one of the most famous Olympic runners
  • For four consecutive Olympiads he was champion from 164 -152 bce

  • varazdat
  • He achieved his greatest triumph when he became the Olympic champion at the Olympics of 385
  • Varazdat was well known for boxing

IMPORTANT PEOPLE PT 3

  • Cynisca
  • Was known for being a tomboy
  • The only event women could participate in were equestrian events at a complete different Olympics( horse races and chariot races)
  • Cynisca was Born in 440 bc
  • She was the first women to take victory at the Olympics

IMPORTANT PEOPLE PT 4

  • Polydamas
  • Myth has it that he could fight off an animal with his bare hands
  • When Polydamas and his friends were in a cave the roof began to crumble down upon them, Polydamas held his hands up to the roof allowing his friends escape, even though he was strong, the well known wrestler was killed.

ORIGINATION

  • The Ancient Olympic Games were religious and athletic festivals held every four years in honour of Zeus and the gods in Olympia. Competition was against city-states and kingdoms of Ancient Greece.

  • Pankration (wrestling)
  • Equastrian events (horses involved)

IMPORTANT EVENTS

  • It started in 776 bc
  • The Roman invasion in 146 bc
  • The Olympics started again in 85 bc but because the romans invaded the greeks they were supressed by the roman rules
  • Disrupted by the germanic invasion around 300 ad

IMPORTANT EVENTS PT 2

  • The Games became part of a pagan festival until the Christian emperor Theodosius ordered the closure of all pagan events in 393
  • Women were involved in the olympics in the 1900s
  • 1896, the first modern Olympic Games were held with athletes from 14 countries participating

FACTS

  • The prize for event winners in the Ancient Olympics was an olive branch wreath
  • Began over 2,700 years ago
  • The stadium could hold 45,000 people
  • In the first Olympics in 776 bce there was only one event, a short 200 meter sprint called a ' stade'.
  • Hefty fines were conducted against cheating athletes
