PRESENTATION OUTLINE

The Ancient Olympics

  • Every 4 years games were held at Olympia.
  • Olympia was located in southwest Greece in a valley.
  • The Olympics were rumored to be held at around 778BC.

The Sacred Truce

  • The cities and states of Greece was going through war alot.
  • Messengers were sent from Elis to tell people about the Sacred Truce.
  • The truce allowed people to travel safely.

Events at the Games

  • The first Olympics lasted a day. There was a race to the other end of the stadium.
  • More events were added to the Olympics, some of them were boxing, chariot racing and discus.
  • Winners got a wreath of leaves. Winners could marry rich women and got invites to parties.

Spectators

  • 50,000 people could fit into the stadium. People who couldn't get in stayed in tents outside.
  • The stadium was hot and they didn't have that much water to drink.
  • When the games ended there was entertainment and a large feast. Politicians used this platform to do bisuness and make speaches.

The Pankration

  • The Pankration is known as all-in wrestling. It was a very dangerous event.
  • There were almost no rules and the few rules they had were mostly ignored by biting and poking peoples eyes.
  • If anyone was caught cheating they had to pay for a bronze statue of Zeus.
