WHAT THEY ARE

  • Also Referred to as medicine
  • Sold over the counter
  • Used for medical diagnosis, cure, treatment, or prevention of disease
  • Generally do not require a prescription

The Different types

  • Drug from natural origin: Herbal or plant or mineral origin
  • Partial herbal and partial chemical synthesis Chemical
  • Drug derived from chemical synthesis
  • Drug derived from animal origin
  • Drug derived from microbial origin: Antibiotics

THE ADVANTAGES

  • Relieve pain/Cure you
  • Answer to life threatening conditions 
  • Stimulate the body
  • Without them people could risk dying

THE DISADVANTAGES

  • People take advantage
  • Illegally resold/Not Safe 
  • Overdose
  • Side Effects

DOSAGE AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

  • The dose is the amount of drug taken at any one time
  • Weight (mg) or Solution (ml)
  • Dosage forms (e.g. 1 capsule, 1 suppository)
  • Overdose can lead to death
  • Side-Effects

  • Abdominal Pain
  • Weakness
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Hair Loss
  • Blindness

  • In 2010, 7 million people used Over-The-Counter-Drugs
  • Pain relievers - 5.1 million

  • Stimulants - 1.1 million
  • Sedatives - 0.4 million
