7 Wonders of the Ancient World

  •  Sites around the Mediterranean 
  • "7" symbolized perfection to the Greeks
  • Written by Herodotus and Callimachus of Cyrene

1. The Great Pyramid of Giza

  • The oldest of the seven wonders
  • Took about 20 years to build
  • Finished around 2560 B.C.

2. Hanging Gardens of Babylon

  • location is not definite
  • some believe the site is a legend
  • Existed until the first century AD, if it existed at all 

3. Temple of Artemis

  • located in Ephesus (modern Turkey)
  • Built in 6th century BC
  • Honored the Greek goddess Artemis

4. Statue of Zeus at Olympia

  • Located in Peloponnesus (modern Greece)
  • Built around 432 BC
  • Approximately 40 feet tall

5. Tomb of Mausolus

  • Located in Halicarnassus (modern Turkey)
  • Built around 350 BC
  • Destroyed by earthquakes during the 15th century

6. Colossus of Rhodes

  • Located in modern Greece
  • Built in 280 B.C. to celebrate Rhodes' victory of Cyprus
  • Stood over 98 feet tall!

7. Lighthouse of Alexandria

  • Large tower built around 280 B.C.
  • Stood over 400 feet tall!
  • It was one of the tallest man-made structures on Earth

7 Wonders of the Modern World

  • Initiated by the New 7 Wonders Foundation (2000) 
  • Over 100 million votes cast
  • Chosen from a selection of 200 monuments

1. The Great Wall of China

  • Opened in 206 B.C., but constructed through the 16th century!
  • Created to Protect the Chinese from the Mongols
  • World's largest man-made structure!

2. Christ the Redeemer

  • Located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
  • Designed by Heitor da Silva Costa in 1931
  • Cost $250,000 to build

3. Manchu Picchu

  • Located in Peru between the Andes Mountains
  • The site can only be reached by foot, train, or helicopter
  • Was unknown to anyone besides locals until 1911

4. Chichén Itzá

  • The political and economic hub of Mayan civilization
  • Flourished from 800 to 1200 A.D. 
  • Means "at the mouth of the well of the people."

5. The Roman Colosseum

  • Built between 70 A.D. in Rome, Italy
  • Was used for almost 500 years for gladiator events and other spectacles
  • Sat nearly 50,000 spectators

6. Taj Majal

  • Located in Agra, India
  • Built between 1632 and 1648
  • represents a number of architectural styles (Persian, Indian, Turkish)

7. Petra, Jordan

  • Declared a World Heritage Site in 1985
  • Capital of the Nabataean empire of King Aretas IV
  • Likely existed in its prime from 9 B.C. to 40 A.D.
