THE 3 ARGUMENTS

CLASSICAL ORATION

  • Has 6 parts
  • The six parts are Exordium: the introduction, Narratio: sets forth facts of the case, Partition: the thesis, Confirmatio: Writer lays out and supports arguments, Refutatio: Writer looks at counter arguments and demonstrates why they aren't compelling, Peroratio: Conclusion/resolution of paper
  • Devised by Greek and Roman rhetoricians two thousand years ago for presenting cases in courts or making speeches in the senate.

ROGERIAN ARGUMENT

  • Developing the Rogerian has 4 parts
  • The first part is the introduction
  • The second part is that the writer describes the opposing side
  • The third part is where the writer finally has a chance to present his or her argument
  • The last part is find common ground between the opposing sides

TOULMIN ARGUMENT

  • This argument has 3 parts
  • The first part is called the claim:the position or claim being argued for, the conclusion of the argument
  • The next part is called the grounds: reasons or supporting evidence that bolster the claim
  • The last part is called the warrant: the principle, provision, or chain of reasoning that connects the grounds/reason to the claim
