PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Thalassemia is a blood disorder passed down through families where the body makes abnormal hemoglobin, which is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen.
SYMPTOMS
- Fatigue
- Organs can be damaged
- There may be restricted growth
- Heart failure
- Death
MORE SYMPTOMS:
- Weakness
- Pale appearance
- Yellow discoloration of skin (jaundice)
- Facial bone deformities
- Abdominal swelling
Treatments:
In cases of mild thalassemia, treatments may not be required. In more severe cases, they might need regular blood transfusions. Exercising and eating well will help.
Thalassemia can cause death as early as 20-30 years old because of heart failure. But, in mild cases of thalassemia, life span won't be affected.
