Presenter (Ross Kemp VS Stacey Dooley)

Ross Kemp

  • Ross Kemp is a former Eastenders actor and Investigative Journalist
  • He was known for fulfilling a 'Hard man' role
  • However, as a presenter he visits often impoverished areas, gangs or crime hot spots and tries to interview those involved

On screen he usually wears a black shirt and jeans with no make up, something that makes him appear tough. He also has a strong authoritative voice, making his opinion on hard-core parts of life seem to be from experience. His opinion is often concealed, however he often questions the logic behind gangs and interviews police, often on there side (however he still remains somewhat neutral). He has a large presence on screen, his voice over is booming and a good third of the screen time is Ross Kemp explaining a situation or location to the audience. He is integral to the documentary.

Stacey Dooley

  • Stacey Dooley is a Investigative Journalist who originally participated in a documentary focused on fashion obsesses consumers
  • She is from Luton
  • She will often tell the audience the situation of the area, but focuses on drugs, not the gangs. Though there is interview there aren't as much as Ross Kemp
  • She wears clothing that is more 'fashionable'. She wears make up, and often has her hair made up. her voice is less booming and authoritative, but more feminine and informative. Her views are more evident in her documentary, as she often reacts more negatively to the drugs shown, whereas Ross Kemp is less phased. She also doesn't have a large presence, as she is clearly new to these places (she is easily phased and seems petite) so we take her opinion as less experience and more research.
  • Unlike Ross Kemp, if she was replaced there wouldn't be a huge difference content wise

Difference in presenters

  • Ross Kemp is more objective, whereas Stacey Dooley has more defined opinions
  • Ross Kemp appears more experienced but Stacey seems more inexperienced
  • Ross Kemp has a large screen presence, but Stacey Dooley has a smaller presence
  • Because of these differences in presenters, it supports the idea that for a documentary on crime a misplaced presenter can have a large effect on the documentary.
