MESOPOTAMIA VS INDUS RIVER VALLEY

Geography
Mesopotamia is between the Tigris and Euphrates river. The word Mesopotamia is a Greek word for "between the rivers".

Environmental Challenges
The three environmental challenges in the Mesopotamia civilization was to flood, fire, and droughts.

The fire can help burn up the trees and make the soil fertile.

Government
Mesopotamia government was a combination of monarchy and democracy. Kings ruled the people.

Religion
The meaning of life was was for one to live in concert with the gods. Humans were created as co labors with their gods to hold off the faces of chaos to keep the community running smoothly.

Social Structure
They had three levels of society. At the top were most powerful government officials. Priests and soldiers the middle was made of teachers etc.

The hierarchy of Mesopotamia can be symbolized as a triangle shaped pyramid.

Writing
They began drawing pictures. They used reed as a pen. They drew on soft pieces of clay.

Achievements
The Sumerians learned to measure time. They also traded for metal. The Sumerian farmers had to pay tax on their property.

Indus River Valley
Geography- Indus civilization remnants have been discovered from as far south as Mumbai in Maharashtra state, Indiana and as far north as the Himalayas and northern Afghanistan.

The indus is the longest river in Pakistan. The Indus River begins in the himalaya mountains and flows nearly 3,000 kilometers to the Arabian Sea.

Government
The precists had a large impact on the government of the Indus River valley. The religion was the basis for their government with all of their laws coming from the religious beliefs.

Religion
The Indus Valley had a primitive religious system. In addition to a mother goddess representing fertility, it is suggested that they worshiped animals to some degree. They believed in the cycle of samsara which is the cycle of birth and re birth.

Social Structure
People were born into social classes that could not be changed.

Environmental challenges
One is monsoons which destroyed crops and another thing is that farmers in the Indus Valley could only plant crops in areas where the water from the Indus was direct.

The river flooded regularly some years worse then others. Good thing is they had fertile soil and that was great for making bricks.

Writing
The indus civilization developed a writing system that is still undeciphered to this day. The Indus Valley writing used seals with pictures and symbols on them.

Achievements
They had one of the first indoor pluming systems. Some people credit them with the development of fireworks and gunpowder.

I think that Mesopotamia was more successful because their rivers didn't flood every year so they didn't have to adapt to change as much. Also they learned how to measure time and that is something that we still use to this day.
