Ten percent time

Minecraft in the Classroom

Ten percent time

  • Recentls, Minecraft has been released for schools (Minecraft ED)
  • I spent my 10% time researching how this works in the classroom.
  • I have done so with the intention of using this in my history class.
  • I was able to purchase an account and set up my own server.
  • This server can be used with my students in the classroom.

Rationale
I chose this topic because I wanted my students to truly experience history. I also wanted them to learn about the importance of interpersonal relationships, building community, and how effective societies work. I hope that the Minecraft project I intend to do with them will reinforce concepts learned in my social studies class. What I learned from the websites I viewed has greatly contributed to my being able to set up my own server and understand how to utilize this program in the classroom.

In my classroom students will...:

  • See how geography affects societal development
  • Learn how societies organize themselves.
  • Learn how early humans went from hunter-gatherers.
  • Discover how the first civilizations were created.

Students will be placed into groups that will - once a week - utilize our Minecraft server. They will try to create a society that will go from hunter-gatherers trying to survive to a small civilization.
