NO OTHER GODS

WE SHOULD FEAR GOD

BUT . . .
In the Bible, it seems that every time God or an angel show up unexpectedly people are always responding in fear - when Peter realizes Jesus is truly God he says "depart from me, for I am sinful!" (Luke 5); and every time angels show up - to Zechariah or to Mary (Luke 1) or to the shepherds (Luke 2), they have to say "don't be afraid,"

Whenever we see God in Revelation He is always awesome and worthy of worship by all the angels in heaven. It's this kind of fear the First Commandment commands - not fear for our lives, but utmost honor and respect for Him who made and rules over the entire universe.

WE SHOULD ALSO LOVE GOD

AND . . .
And despite His holiness, He invites us to love Him as dear children love their dear Father.

Dear, not fear, is the better word to describe how He wants us to feel about Him, because that's how He feels about us.

WE SHOULD TRUST GOD

We sing this hymn by Martin Luther, based on several Psalms.

Martin Luther also said that a god is
- something that we trust in to provide anything we need, and
- something that we run to for help whenever we're in trouble

So, what do you trust to provide what you need? Your own talents, skills, abilities, wits, training? Your money, family, friends? Things you can sell? Your ability to talk your way out of things? Or God the Father and His Son Jesus and the Holy Spirit?

And what do you run to for help when you're in trouble? Mom? Dad? Friends? Money? The government? Your gun? Or God the Father and His Son Jesus and the Holy Spirit?

ABOVE ALL THINGS

WE SHOULD FEAR, LOVE AND TRUST IN GOD
Who is it that you fear, love and trust above all things? This Commandment commands us that it ought to be the God we confess in the Apostles' Creed, who invites us to call Him Our Father.

THE LORD'S NAME IN VAIN

THE SECOND COMMANDMENT: DO NOT USE
"In vain" means for any kind of foolish, dumb, or thoughtless reason.

WE SHOULD NOT

"Cursing" is when we say we want God to punish someone with something nasty, like sending them to hell.
"Swearing" is when we say we want God to be our witness that we our telling the truth (Jesus said that we should be trustworthy enough on our own),
"Deceiving" is when try to trick someone to get something we want.
"Satanic arts" includes every kind of witchcraft, astrology, tarot, and occult activity.
"Frivolously" means "without thinking." This girl seems to be in the habit of thinking that if she says "OMG!" it's OK because it's not "Oh, My God!" or that "OMG!" is the same as "Oh, Snap!"

THE HOLY DAY

THE THIRD COMMANDMENT: SANCTIFY
We don't actually "make holy" a day that God has already called holy.
What we do when we "sanctify the Holy Day" is agree with Him that this day will be holy for us, too.
That day for Christians is Sunday, the day Jesus rose from the dead.

WE SHOULD NOT

DESPISE PREACHING AND GOD'S WORD
The main way we sanctify the Holy Day is by going to church to worship God, to hear His Word and receive His forgiveness in the Sacraments.

WE SHOULD

YOUR PARENTS

THE FOURTH COMMANDMENT: HONOR
Our parents are the closest reminders we have to the fact that God wants us to call Him Father. Even when they do sinful things, our parents are still pictures of God for us. If we want to honor Him completely, we honor them too.
Luther said that it's also right for us to honor everyone in authority over us, whether teachers, pastors, police officers, congressmen, the governor or president or judges.

WE SHOULD NOT

DESPISE OR ANGER OUR PARENTS
"To despise" means to think that they're the same as garbage. We wouldn't do that to God, or make Him angry, either. We shouldn't do those things to our parents, either. Instead, we should try to live at peace and love with them as we would with all people.

WE SHOULD

These are ways we can do that.

DON'T KILL OTHERS

THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT:
Okay, these guys have killed this bird for food. But the commandment is talking about people killing other people: don't do that! But it's about more than just killing!

WE SHOULD NOT

HURT OR HARM ANYONE PHYSICALLY
It's also about hurting and harming others - not only hurting someone enough to draw blood or break a bone, but this commandment even talks about slapping or poking or punching another person in the arm. In fact, this commandment means we should really stop and think about it any time we are about to use any kind of violence against someone else - even if they started it, even if they hurt me first!

WE SHOULD

HELP AND SUPPORT ANOTHER'S PHYSICAL NEED
This commandment (as all of them) isn't just about "not killing," it's also about "the opposite of killing" which is - whenever you see another person you should think "what kinds of physical needs do they have that I might help with?" Pushing a wheelchair? Carrying a grocery bag? Opening a door? Turning on a light? What else might you do?

ADULTERY

THE SIXTH COMMANDMENT: DON'T COMMIT
"Adultery" technically means "a person who is married to another person and having sex with a third person they're not married to." This commandment covers much more than that, though - it covers all kinds of sexual sins. I could list a lot of them, but you probably have parental controls on your search engine that would block this whole presentation if I did.

WE SHOULD

Here's what it boils down to, in three positive ways.
The first is about sexual purity in all of life.
The second is not only about purity in the things we do, but in the things we say, too (like the jokes we tell or the words we use).
The third is about way we treat the person we are married to. It's even about the person we might be married to someday, and causes us to think about how the way we treat the people we date along the way to marriage show honor and love to the person we will be married to someday.

DON'T STEAL

THE SEVENTH COMMANDMENT:
OK in baseball; not OK anywhere else!

WE SHOULD NOT

As in the other commandments, this is about loving your neighbor and doing what is best for him, even if that means you don't get something from him that you might want.

WE SHOULD

HELP THEM TO KEEP AND PROTECT IT

FALSE WITNESS

THE EIGHTH COMMANDMENT: DON'T BEAR
"To bear false witness" means to tell lies about another person. Often that results in a ruined reputation for them. Gossip and bullying are included in this commandment.

WE SHOULD NOT

WE SHOULD

Sometimes the last one comes out as "Explain everything in the kindest way." That's certainly true, too!

MEANS TO OBSESS OVER WANTING SOMETHING

CONCLUSION

EXODUS 20:5-6
I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
