TEMPLE OF CONCORD

CONSTRUCTION

  • Vowed 367 B.C, built by 167 B.C
  • Vowed by Marcus Furius Camillius and built by L. Opimius
  • Columns were made of white marble the rest of the temple was made of limestone
  • 45 by 24 meters was the plot used for the temple
  • Nothing is known about the foundations of this building

CONSTRUCTION

  • The temple was built in a t-shape which was unusual at the time...
  • this was due to the irregular building plans by Tiberius the emperor due to the building site
  • In approximately AD 1450 the temple was razed and turned...
  • into a lime-kiln to recover the marble for building
  • Built in honor of the goddess Concordia its festival day was July 22

PURPOSES

  • Housed meetings for the senate...
  • because L. Opimius was a consul
  • This temple was also used as an art museum that contained many statues of gods and godesses, greek paintings, and other works of art
  • Tiberius restored and enlarged the temple from 7BC to 10 AD...
  • dedicating it to his desceased brother Drusus after it was destroyed by lightning or fire in 9 BC
