TED TALK SKILLS

BIGGER THAN A SLIDE DECK
If you don't know what a TED talk is, throw your hands up and say "I have been saved" because today we will lead you out of ignorance and into the light.
We will be using Haiku Deck to create presentations that are engaging and professional looking, with photos that are responsibly sourced.

MINIMAL VISUALS

AND A BLACK TURTLE NECK
Ok, we are not making you wear a black turtle neck, but you can learn a great deal from Steve Jobs about presenting. His Apple keynotes changed the standard. Many of his slides have one word or just a picture. He made his audience listen to him by not giving them anything else to read.
His simple but specific style of presentation was designed to be accessible, to get more people paying attention.
He spoke on the audiences level.

IN A MUSEUM

NOT IN YOUR HAND
We are going to use HaikuDeck and add private notes so that when you are presenting your notes are on your screen.
We still don't want you reading the screen you are holding, know your material and use your notes to make sure you hit the main points.

EYE CONTACT

NOTHING BEATS A GOOD VISUAL
Haiku deck helps you find Creative Commons images. Be sure to go into settings and turn off premium content.
If you were in business you might want to buy images and templates, but for EDU we can work with what is there. You can also easily bring in your own images.

IGNITE TALK

YOU HAVE 2 MINUTES TO INSPIRE
You will create a 2-3 minute talk about something that inspires you, an idea or place, or even a person.
You goal is to ignite in your audience a spark of interest, a curiously to learn more, to explore your idea on their own.
You need to use Haiku deck, and use the private notes function. Keep it smart and simple.
